Before any of that, though, comes a more fundamental choice: the material. Timber, uPVC and aluminium each behave very differently over a lifetime, and the right answer depends on what you value in your home. This guide makes the case for timber, and explains where it outperforms the alternatives.
Timber is the only mainstream window material that is genuinely renewable. Responsibly sourced and certified wood, such as the FSC-backed timber we use, comes from forests managed to regrow what they harvest. Modified timbers like Accoya take this further, delivering exceptional stability and longevity from fast-growing, sustainable sources.
The environmental gap widens once you account for the whole life of the product. Timber carries far lower embodied carbon than uPVC or aluminium, both of which are energy-intensive to manufacture. For homeowners who care about the footprint of their choices, timber is the clear starting point.
Wood is a natural insulator, which gives timber frames an inherent advantage in keeping heat where you want it. Paired with modern glazing, the performance is excellent. Our Lignum timber range achieves a U-value of 1.2 W/m²K with double glazing, 0.9 W/m²K with triple glazing, and 0.7 W/m²K with vacuum glazing, where a lower figure means better insulation and lower energy bills.
That last option matters for older and listed homes in particular. Vacuum glazing offers cutting-edge thermal performance within an ultra-thin profile, so you can dramatically improve a period property’s efficiency without the chunky sightlines that would spoil its character.
Cared for properly, timber windows last for generations. The frames can be maintained, repaired and refinished over their lifetime, rather than being thrown away the moment something fails. Modified timbers such as Accoya resist the rot, swelling and movement that used to be wood’s weak point, which is why we are confident enough to stand behind our products with a tiered 30-year warranty: 30 years against timber rot and decay, 10 years on manufacturing and factory paint, and 5 years on hardware.
This is the opposite of uPVC, which cannot meaningfully be repaired. When a uPVC unit discolours, warps or fails, the only real option is full replacement.
Few materials suit a home the way timber does. It looks at home on a period cottage and equally on a sharp contemporary build, and because every window and door is made to measure, the proportions and detailing can be matched exactly to the property. You are not limited to a handful of catalogue sizes.
Finish is part of that flexibility. Timber can be painted, oiled or stained in effectively any colour, and refreshed years later if your taste or the fashion changes. uPVC, by contrast, comes in its colour for life and tends to yellow and dull with age.

uPVC is the budget option, and it shows over time: it discolours, it can warp, it cannot be repaired or refinished, it rarely suits period or listed homes, and at end of life it is difficult to recycle.
Aluminium is strong, slim and durable, and has its place on certain modern designs, but it carries high embodied carbon, can feel cold both literally and aesthetically, and is unsuitable for most heritage settings. If you want aluminium’s low-maintenance exterior with timber’s warmth inside, our alu-clad range gives you both: a timber interior protected by an aluminium outer skin.
